TINEA VERSICOLOR

Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection of the skin caused by an overgrowth of yeast, predominantly the species Malassezia globosa, Malassezia furfur, and Pityrosporum ovale.

WHO IS AT RISK OF TINEA VERSICOLOR?

While everyone has yeast naturally present on their skin, tinea versicolor occurs when this yeast grows excessively. This condition is most prevalent among adolescent boys and young adult males, particularly in hot and humid climates. It is a common skin disease in tropical and subtropical regions.

Factors such as excessive sweating, oily skin, or a weakened immune system can trigger the overgrowth. Tinea versicolor is not contagious and cannot be spread from person to person.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF TINEA VERSICOLOR?

The primary symptom of tinea versicolor is discolored patches on the skin. These patches can cause loss of pigment in people with darker skin, while those with lighter skin may see darkened spots. The rash is often more visible on tanned skin and can spread to the face, arms, legs, or other body areas. The affected skin may become dry, scaly, and start to flake. Itching is common, and the rash may become more pronounced with sun exposure. The spots or rash may fade in cooler weather and return in warmer conditions.

HOW CAN TINEA VERSICOLOR BE TREATED?

Topical antifungal medications are the primary treatment for tinea versicolor. Commonly used topical agents include clotrimazole, ketoconazole, and miconazole. For more severe cases, oral antifungal medications might be prescribed, though these are typically used short-term due to potential side effects and interactions with other medications.

Additional treatment and management options include using medicated cleansers once or twice a month, particularly during warm or humid months. Applying over-the-counter dandruff shampoo to the affected skin for ten minutes daily can also be an effective home treatment.

While tinea versicolor can be effectively controlled with proper treatment, it is prone to recurrence, especially in climates that are tropical and humid.
